10 years ago Georg Franck published his theory Ökonomie der Aufmerksamkeit (Economy of Attention; English article in German magazine Telepolis) which predicts a swift to attention as the prior, basal currency of any knowledge-based society. In 2005 Franck deepened (and finished) his theory in his book Mentaler Kapitalismus (Mental Capitalism). – I highly recommend Franck’s books.
