Schofield: “Guess what: although I saw a couple of dozen WebPads of various types, I never found anybody who’d actually bought one, and the whole movement crashed and burned. – Times and markets change, of course, but it would be amusing to know if any of the people advocating CrunchPads now either bought a WebPad roughly a decade ago, or – better still – rubbished the whole idea.”
Hermann: “The whole thing works pretty well, and I have to give Arrington props for pushing the project along this far. … Yeah, I’d say ‘are we going to even make this thing?’ is a ‘real question’, but even for $300, I kind of hope they do.“

UMPCportal: “All in all I think Techcrunch have set themselves tough targets for the device. While not impossible, I suspect it will be more expensive than planned, will have so-so battery life and could be a little too heavy for most people. They’ll need to convince an investor that they can sell hundreds and hundreds of thousands in order to hit the parts budget and that convertible netbooks or MIDs won’t be a threat.”
Arrington: “We’ve completed our original goal of building a ‘dead simple and dirt cheap touch screen web tablet to surf the web.’ The hardware is nearing lockdown. Software development is rolling. And we’ve spent very little money to get to this point. – We’ve received thousands of comments and emails from people who want this device right now. We’ve had tremendous support from the community in helping us build the prototypes, and Via has been flat out amazing with their support of the project. – We’ve also gotten quite a bit of interest from the investment community. The real question for us is whether this project has legs and should go forward towards production units, which is a very big step from a working prototype. That would require spinning the company off from the blog and building a team around Louis. It’s a decision we haven’t made yet.”
Scoble: “This is huge and is only going to get bigger. Thanks to companies like PCH in Shenzhen, China, and Twitter and friendfeed (where you can have conversations with thousands of people in live time) we’re going to see new companies spring up and design products and build brands. – Is Techcrunch a blog anymore? Or did it just become a consumer electronics brand? – Or, even better, if you read my comment over on TechCrunch maybe TechCrunch isn’t a brand at all. Maybe they’ll charge you to put YOUR brand on the Tablet PC.“
