NYT: “Amazon generally charges $9.99 for the digital versions of best sellers, although many publishers still sell the digital content to Amazon for the same price that they sell physical books. That means that for now, Amazon is taking a loss or making a small margin on the sale of some e-books. – ‘We do not agree with their pricing strategy,’ said Carolyn K. Reidy, chief executive of Simon & Schuster. ‘I don’t believe that a new book by an author should ipso facto be less expensive electronically than it is in paper format.’ – Mr. Bezos disagreed. ‘E-books should be cheaper than physical books. Readers are going to demand that, and they are right because there are so many supply chain efficiencies relative to printing a paper book,’ he said.”
AdAge: “Scott Anthony (president of Innosight) said even though there are better e-readers out there, including Sony’s (which is not wireless, unlike the Kindle), ease of use is possibly Kindle’s greatest value proposition. – ‘What’s interesting to me is the device itself is actually not very good. It’s a clunky, bulky device, but the ability to get the content you want, when you want is astronomically good,’ Mr. Anthony said. – The Kindle is not without competition, as a slew of vendors unveiled their Kindle-killer hopefuls at the Consumer Electronics Show in January. A formidable challenger to the Kindle could lie in the smartphone space.”
