WSJ: Google is preparing a store for online business software that integrates with its Web services; http://j.mp/9Y0MFm
WSJ: “Google Inc. is preparing to launch a store selling online business software that integrates with its Web services, according to people briefed by the company, enlisting software developers in its battle against Microsoft Corp.”
NYT: “While the solutions marketplace is simply a place for connecting users of Google Apps with third-party vendors, Google will take a slice of the revenue generated by tools and services sold through its store, the person familiar with Google’s plans said. The revenue generated by the store is expected to be small, at least by the standards of Google’s $23 billion annual business.”
NW: “We contacted Google for an official comment and received the following statement: ‘The Google Solutions Marketplace makes it easy for our customers to connect with an ecosystem of products and professional services. We’re constantly working with our partners to deliver more solutions to businesses, but we have nothing to announce at this time.’”
NW: “Google Apps is a business-class version of Google Docs and includes souped-up Gmail, Google Calendar, and Google Docs (for word processing, spreadsheet, presentations and forms) components along with administration capabilities.”
VB: “Google already has a solutions marketplace where users of Google Apps can find add-on software and support. It also operates the Android Marketplace for mobile phone apps for its Android-based cell phones. But this new store will help Google’s business partners promote Google Apps. The store is aimed at helping Google to better integrate with its partners and to make it easier for users to buy new services. An estimated 20 million people use Google Apps.”

Facebook: “At any given time, the news on your home page can consist of celebrity gossip posted by your sister, sports scores from the ESPN Page, and a political debate among your friends as they cite their favorite blogs. With so much information at your fingertips on one site, Facebook can serve as your personalized news channel.”
Hitwise: “News and Media is the #11 downstream industry after Facebook, receiving 3.69% of the social networking site’s traffic. To offer a comparison, 6% of downstream traffic from Facebook went to Shopping and Classifieds last week and 6% to Business and Finance and 15% went to Entertainment websites (YouTube in particular). … Facebook could be a major disruptor to the News and Media category. And with the Wall Street Journal already publishing content to Facebook, perhaps the social network can avoid the run-ins that Google has suffered recently with Rupert Murdoch. We will continue to watch this space.”
RWW: “Facebook is the player to watch. Facebook – the dreaded privacy-violating, Farmville-drenched, closed-data, social networking megalith (which is also fun to use and great in many ways) – could be the web’s best hope for transforming the world through the power of online syndication and subscription.”
VB: “All of the metrics services rank Facebook in the top 5 of all internet sites. The only sites that get more traffic are search engines (Google) and portals (Yahoo and MSN). Clearly the status updates Facebook users post to their pages have the power to drive large amounts of traffic to media sources when links are provided.“
