Hendrickson: “The three horse race between Facebook, Google, and MySpace to achieve dominance in the internet identity space doesn’t appear to be letting up any. It isn’t a mere coincidence that both Facebook and Google have announced their public launches on the same day; both are struggling to establish themselves as the de facto standard for both developers and end users. MySpace managed to beat out both Facebook and Google months ago when it publicly launched its service.”
RWW: “We’ve got our concerns about these kinds of initiatives coming from big companies but it’s also exciting to imagine what kinds of possibilities programs like this will enable.”
RWW: “Open Source vs. Proprietary technology isn’t just about desktop software anymore – now it’s about our identities and social connections, all around the web. We’ve published a mind map below displaying our understanding of the contrasts between these two identity systems. If you’d like to add our thoughts to that map, you can. … Facebook Connect vs. OpenID is going to be a big decision that every website owner should consider.“

Quite an interesting approach only I cannot see the real value. Besides this, it disturbes the look & feel of the site. Doubt the success.

Andreas, if I get it right, Google’s Social Bar is meant to aggregate and display other Google Friend Connect features compactly: “With the social bar, your visitors will be able to see crucial info at a glance and engage with social features through convenient drop-down gadgets.” – I believe we’ll have to wait for future add-ons to value its relevance.
