TC: “On the surface these may seem like evolutionary changes, but the stakes are high. Facebook is trying to shore itself up as the foundation for a living, rapid-fire Web where the line between private messages and public content is blurred. Under no cisrcumstances does it want to cede the thought stream of its users to Twitter. Instead of asking, ‘What are you doing right now?’, the new status update box asks, ‘What’s on your mind?’ Mix in Facebook Connect, and these thought streams can be collected from all over the Web. – Despite its already considerable size, Facebook is showing how adept it can be in responding to new threats. If Facebook cannot buy Twitter, it will try to beat it instead.”
RWW: “It will be interesting to see how Facebook’s community reacts to these changes. It seems like Facebook purposely made this announcement a week before it is going live in order to prepare its users. After all, when Facebook first introduced the news feed in 2006, its users were anything but happy about this new feature. There will also be a preview site where users can familiarize themselves with the new homepage before they see it on their own page.”
Mashable: “Overall, the new design will make Pages more dynamic and viral, but it will also pose some challenges too.”
AdAge: “All of these changes by Facebook are designed to put more information into the ‘stream.’ The stream (a.k.a. the newsfeed, status updates, etc.) is what makes Facebook as engaging as it is. So much information will now be put into the stream that it will require filtering. Facebook is betting that you’ll do just that. – But can brands be trusted to respect social (network) etiquette? And can a few brands that abuse their power ruin it for the rest of us? – Stay tuned, true believers. As previous Facebook launches have proven, they have a knack for launching first, and fixing second. This thing will have to play itself out in the wild before we know for sure.”
ClickZ: “Facebook believes that with time, brands will hone their approach to pushing information to users. Executives emphasized restraint will be required to prevent fans from removing a brand’s information from their activity streams. While Profile and Pages owners are not informed when a person takes such an action, one Facebook product exec said advertisers can optimize their Facebook communications by measuring responses to calls-to-action that are pushed into the activity stream.”
AdAge: “Indeed, with great power comes great responsibility, said Ian Schafer, CEO of Deep Focus, on DigitalNext. ‘You will have the power to (and responsibility of) publishing directly to people’s home pages. … But can brands be trusted to respect social (network) etiquette? And can a few brands that abuse their power ruin it for the rest of us?'”
